A mere 2,7 percent  of winners have been chosen from the noble science of linguistics. Here  are some more nominees. Readers are urged to propose additional candidates  and studies.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\">(1) Peace Price:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"><em>Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Sudre<\/em> for inventing  the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Solresol\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Langue Musicale Universelle (Solresol)<\/em><\/a>, a language based on the seven-scale  tone system. With these tones, he formed a vocabulary of 2600 roots.  Whereas other artificial languages discriminated the deaf and blind, Solresol was easily expanded to colours, tactile signs and rhythms,  providing a truly international language (see Mikael Parkvall\u2019s book <em> Limits of Language<\/em>, pages 132-133).<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\">(2) Computer science:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"><em>Michael Levit, Richard Huber,  Anton Batliner, Elmar Noeth<\/em>. (Chair for Pattern Recognition, University  of Erlangen, Germany). &#8220;<a href=\"www.icsi.berkeley.edu\/~levit\/papers\/ISCAPros01_Alcohol.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Use of prosodic speech characteristics for automated  detection of alcohol intoxication<\/a>.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"><!--more-->(3) Cognitive Science:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"><em>Lieberman P., Protopapas A, ; Kanki B.G..<\/em> \u201c<a href=\"www.ilsp.gr\/homepages\/protopapas\/pdf\/Lieberman_etal_1995_ASEM.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Speech production and cognitive  deficits on Mt. Everest<\/a>\u201d. Some of the results: \u201cDeficits  in speech motor control and in the comprehension of syntax were observed  as five members of the 1993 American Sagarmatha Expedition ascended  Mt. Everest. We analyzed speech recordings and cognitive test scores  of the climbers at different altitudes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\">(4) Chemistry:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\">Watch out, there are two scholars  with the name <em>Edo Nyland<\/em> in Canada. One, a natural scientist, has  a warning sign on <a href=\"http:\/\/www-geo.phys.ualberta.ca\/~edo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">his website<\/a> that he does not have anything to do with  the other one. The other one is the nominee <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.islandnet.com\/~nyland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Edo Nyland<\/a><\/em> for proving that Basque  provides the key to understanding all the world\u2019s languages. The English  word <em>begin<\/em> is actually derived from a string of Basque words  found in a dictionary: <em>ibeni egindura inor<\/em> \u201cstart action someone\u201d.  His revolutionary method has thus far not attracted a huge congregation  of followers. His method is so revolutionary that old-fashioned, brain-washed  linguists cannot fathom it. And <a href=\"http:\/\/www.islandnet.com\/~nyland\/eskimo.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a> you can read that the author  of this item is not enlightened yet.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\">(5) Biology:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www-personal.umich.edu\/~thomason\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sarah Grey Thomason<\/a><\/em> for providing  the definite proof that people have no memory for languages spoken in  previous lives, in the article in <em>American Speech <\/em>and <a href=\"http:\/\/www-personal.umich.edu\/~thomason\/papers\/xenogl.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\">(6) Engineering<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\">David B. Pisoni<\/span><\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www3.interscience.wiley.com\/journal\/119438156\/#c1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; color: #0000ff; font-size: small;\"><em> &amp; Christopher  S. Martin<\/em>. 1991. &#8220;Effects of alcohol on speech: I. Durations of isolated  words, sentences, and passages in fluent speech.&#8221; <em>J. Acoust. Soc.  Am.<\/em> 90 (4): 2311-2311.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\">(7) Law<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"><em>Reinhold Amman<\/em> for publishing  the journal <a href=\"http:\/\/sonic.net\/maledicta\/journal.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Maledicta<\/em><\/a> through several decades. It is the only  scientific journal completely devoted to swearing, inappropriate and  politically incorrect jokes, ethnic slurs, insults, etc. Not even a  prison sentence and personal bankruptcy stopped him from continuing.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\">(8) Ornithology<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"><em>Rupert Sheldrake<\/em> for his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sheldrake.org\/papers\/Animals\/parrot_telepathy.html\">proof<\/a> that parrots do not only understand human language, but that they also  understand human words through telepathy.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[Maskinovers\u00e6ttelse til dansk her] In an earlier message we wrote about the Ig Nobel prizes, and the five prizes awarded to linguistic research in the first 18 years of their existence.
